My Approach to Teaching Art

Hello! I’m Amii. A busy mum and coloured pencil artist.

As both an award-winning coloured pencil artist and experienced educator, I understand that meaningful artistic growth happens when:

  1. You're encouraged to develop your own artistic style rather than simply copying

  2. Techniques are explained in multiple ways to accommodate different learning styles

  3. You have space to experiment without fear of "doing it wrong"

  4. Support continues beyond the formal lessons as you integrate new skills

  5. You learn to slow down and enjoy the process rather than rushing to finish

What Artists Say About Learning With Me

"Amii has a lovely natural and patient way of teaching and is very generous with sharing her technique, tips and tricks. It doesn’t matter whether you draw a lot, already consider yourself an artist or have never picked up a coloured pencil before," — Louise

"Thank you, Amii, for a truly brilliant workshop! I’m genuinely amazed at how much I learned in such a short period of time. Your ability to communicate your remarkably sensitive drawing style in an accessible manner is truly impressive, and I greatly appreciate the generous support you provided to everyone in the group.” - Mandy

“Your explanations were clear, good to follow and I learnt a lot. I am working full time and the flexibility of the workshop was great, I could draw in my own pace. You looked after your participants very well and I felt it was a very personal experience.” - Heike

“I also really appreciated that it wasn’t 2000 people attending, but a small group of people, giving it that personal feel … if you make similar workshops I’ll be your first attendee” - Pia

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Throughout the three sessions, you'll learn techniques for creating:

    • Crisp leaf textures with realistic detail and dimension

    • Naturalistic bark patterns and tree structures

    • Forest floor elements including moss, fallen leaves, and soil textures

    • Light and shadow effects that bring woodland scenes to life

    • Colour selection strategies for creating natural, harmonious woodland palettes

    • Layering approaches that create depth without overworking your piece

Each technique builds upon the previous ones as we develop a single woodland composition together.

  • I've designed this workshop to be accessible while still offering plenty of growth opportunities for more experienced artists. Natural scenes are a wonderful playground for testing new techniques - we'll focus on colour, depth and texture. Unlike portraits or specific subjects where exact proportions and likeness can create pressure, woodland scenes allow you to experiment more freely while developing fundamental skills. You can adapt the techniques to your current level and still create a beautiful, successful piece.

  • We'll focus on one woodland scene across all three sessions. During our time together, we'll cover the essential techniques for the main elements and textures—providing you with a comprehensive toolkit of approaches.

While we may not complete the entire scene within the live sessions, you'll have all the knowledge and guidance needed to continue working at a more leisurely pace afterward. This approach ensures you learn a variety of woodland techniques while giving you the freedom to develop your piece without feeling rushed.

  • No problem! Full recordings of each session will be available in the course hub, and you'll have access to our community group where you can ask questions and share your progress. The four-week support period ensures you have time to catch up and still receive guidance.

  • You'll receive a comprehensive supplies list and colour inspiration guide a few weeks before the workshop begins. The guide will include colour descriptions and suggestions specifically for woodland scenes. While I'll recommend a few specific pencils from select brands that help achieve particular woodland effects, I'll keep these recommendations minimal.

Throughout the workshop, I'll help you work with what you already have, suggesting alternatives and colour mixes so you can achieve similar results regardless of your current collection. This workshop focuses on developing techniques that work for you rather than requiring an extensive range of specific brands.

  • Our community space remains active for four weeks after the final session. During this time, you can share your work, ask questions, and receive guidance as you complete your project. You'll also have the option to submit your completed work for personalised video feedback so you’ll leave with actionable next steps.

  • After our final session, you'll have until May 31st to submit your woodland drawing (whether completed or in progress) for personalised feedback. Simply upload a clear photo of your artwork through the course hub. Within a week, you'll receive a video critique where I'll address specific elements of your work, highlighting successful techniques and suggesting areas for refinement.
